Clos Poggiale Rouge, Sangiovese/Syrah
Crafted from the Clos Poggiale vineyards on the
east coast of Corsica, with its unique
micro-climate, influenced by the sea and
mountains, this Sangiovese (Nielluccio) and
Syrah blend has been cultivated with organic
farming techniques. The wine is deep ruby red in the glass,
it’s bouquet abundant with hints of raspberry
liqueur and warm caramel. This is well crafted
wine with an elegant and silky finish.

Clos Poggiale Blanc, Vermentino
The late ripening grape variety, Vermentino,
comes from vines cultivated in the barren but
deep soils of the Corsican vineyards of Clos
Poggiale. Our Vermentino is a combination of
zesty citrus and floral notes. It is a
delightful, versatile wine with a distinctive
combination of freshness and refinement.

A Taste of History
During the early ‘60s, the Skalli family
discovered a plot of land on a flank of the
Corsican mountains, with the blue Mediterranean
stretching out below; Clos Poggiale (“high
point” in Corsican) was born. There, in the
heart of the pungent marquis, where olive
fragrances intermingle with those of myrtle,
rockrose and arbutus, nature has fulfilled the
conditions for producing a great wine.
Soon the traditional Syrah, Nielluccio and
Vermentino vines spread their roots and began
flourishing in this chosen, AOC classified
soils. With successive harvests, close
observation and deeper understanding of the
vineyard, wines with still more distinctive
personality resulted and a truly exceptional
wine was produced by vintage 2000.
From that moment, each vine has undergone
meticulous care involving cluster selection,
increased exposure to sunlight and late
harvesting to bring out the magic of the terroir.
After separate vinification, the powerful
flavors of Syrah were blended with the delicate
Nielluccio to produce Clos Poggiale red: a fine
wine full of personality, vinous and suave like
its terroir. Then came Clos Poggiale white, its
fresh aroma arising from the careful
vinification of Vermentino. Today, each vintage
of Clos Poggiale continues to reveal its
astonishing, multi-faceted personality
characterized by full-bodied, fruity roundness
and vigor.
The Vineyards
A
truly unique terroir between the mountains and
the sea, the vineyard of Clos Poggiale extends
over an area of 10 hectares on the plateau of
Pianiccia backing onto the mountains of Haute
Corse. Produced by erosion of the neighboring
rock where the soils of the Pianiccia plateau
are essentially deep, though not that fertile,
the top of the hills consist of granite arenite
and colluviums (fine sedimentary deposits) with
the lower soils a calcareous clay that radiates
a great deal of heat from the predominantly
red-brown, soil.
With its proximity to both the mountains and the
Mediterranean, an exceptional micro-climate
notable for wide differences between the day and
night temperatures makes this terroir an oasis
of coolness in the fierce Corsican sun.
Corsican by its very nature, Clos Poggiale are an intrinsic part of the untamed beauty of
the island. The cultivation methods used on the
vines in no way detract from this unspoiled
environment while the vines are tended to very
stringent specifications to bring out all the
potential of this outstanding terroir. |
