Corsica - Homeland of Napoleon and Fine Wines

The Mediterranean island of Corsica is just south of the border of France and Italy, one of the 26 regions of France. Like most of the Mediterranean coastline, Corsica is a happy place for grapes, and people. My favorite spots on the “island of beauty” are near the family estate near the town of Aléria. Robert Skalli Pinot Noir begins here, so I’ve become somewhat of a local – here are a few of my favorite things about Corsica:

Our Pinot Noir vineyard is a sight to behold, overlooking the “Etang de Diane” (lake of Diana). This vineyard estate contains a natural reserve where rare, protected birds stop while migrating and tortoises roam undisturbed. When hungry, the “Coquillages de la Mer” seafood restaurant near Aléria is a family favorite, serving the fresh oysters and mussels farmed nearby in the lake of Diana. While in Aléria, try the delicious artisan products that pair with our Pinot Noir and Vermentino: local coppa, saucisson, sheep and goat cheese.

Another Skalli Family wine made here is Clos Poggiale, grown on granite and red clay soils, atop a small hill overlooking the lake of Diane and surrounded by olive trees. The estate red wine is a blend of Sangiovese (locally known as Nielluccio) and Syrah, and the estate white wine is an aromatic Vermentino.
